At Southern Hills Bible Church we believe the Word of God is sufficient to address the soul problems of Christians. One application of this truth is Biblical Counseling.
The following are some FAQ’s concerning biblical counseling.
What is the Nature of Biblical Counseling?*
Biblical counseling is the personal discipleship ministry of God’s people to others under the oversight of God’s church, dependent upon the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word through the work of the Holy Spirit.
What is the Goal of Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling seeks to reorient disordered desires, affections, thoughts, behaviors, and worship toward a God-designed anthropology in an effort to restore people to a right fellowship with God and others.
What is the Method of Biblical Counseling?
This is accomplished by speaking the truth in love and applying Scripture to the need of the moment by comforting the suffering and calling sinners to repentance, thus working to make them mature as they abide in Jesus Christ.
What Do you Believe About Biblical Counseling?
Biblical change can only happen with a true saving relationship with Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
God expects us to glorify Him (1 Cor 10:31).
The word of God is inerrant and sufficient for care of the inner man (2 Peter 1:3).
The sinful ways we respond to one another and the world come from what the Bible calls the heart (Matthew 15:19).
The word of God is able to change the heart, that is, the disordered thoughts, desires, and actions in our lives (Heb 4:12).
God will not give a Christian any trial or temptation that they cannot overcome (1 Cor 10:13).
We reject the need for extrabiblical answers to soul (inner man) problems. The tenants of psychology can give good and accurate descriptions of problems but have no true answers for the important questions people face (1 Tim 4:7-8).
We welcome treatment and involvement of those treating the outer man, that is, medicine (1 Kings 19:8).
We believe that counseling should be done under the authority of a local church, the elders of whom have responsibility for the souls of their flock (Heb 13:17).
Who Can Receive Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is a ministry primarily to members of our church. We also provide counseling on a limited basis to members of other churches, but ask that one of their elders attend or at least be involved with the counseling process. We also are happy to help churches interested in a counseling ministry or pastors desiring to become more equipped in shepherding their flock in this way.
